The LNP Swimming Program is a project lead by student volunteers who attend Mount Vernon Presbyterian School.
The program came to be as a result of the teen volunteers deciding to dedicate their year-long "IProject" to providing a service their local community as they discovered there was a need for one of this nature.
The program is lead by a devoted group of students; Connor Hughes, James McGuire, Steven Butz, and AJ Whitney. These students identified the need for a swimming program and acted on it. Background research according to the CDC, shows that Latino and African American children are 3 times more likely to drown than that of their white counterparts. Of Latino children in the US, 60% never learn how to swim. A few swim lessons between ages 1 and 4 has been shown to reduce the risk of drowning by 88% in these children.
The project goals are: to schedule monthly lessons for the children, to obtain a permanent location for hosting lessons, to plan the logistics of funds and transportation, and to provide at least 75 children with lessons.
We are very happy that this partnership between LNP and this group of Volunteers was able to come to fruition!
We can't wait to see the progress our students and their coaches make!
